Am I Doing Therapy Wrong?

Posted by Jackie Hill

“Am I doing therapy correctly?” is a question I’ve heard more than once from many of my teen and young adult clients in my psychotherapy practice in Washington, DC and nearby Bethesda, MD. My answer is that there is no “right” or “wrong” way to do therapy. Honoring your own process and journey is important.  Although your therapist may challenge ...READ MORE »

Preparing Children for the Holiday Season

Posted by Lindsay Tiell

It has officially arrived- holiday season 2019! Is it just me or has this year flown by? This time of year can bring upon feelings of excitement, joy, and love. It can also bring upon feelings of anxiety. Through all the travel, family gatherings, and breaks from school/work, some of our children may experience difficulty. As a child and adolescent therapist ...READ MORE »

Give your Relationship a Leisure Makeover

Posted by Alexander Chan

Having fun together breeds a strong romantic relationship. Decades of observational studies corroborate this claim, and I can also attest to this as a couples therapist in the Washington D.C. and Bethesda area. Shared leisure experiences are strongly tied to both personal wellbeing and relationship stability (i.e., whether the relationship lasts). If you are in a long-term relationship, it ...READ MORE »

Positive Co-Parenting: How to Avoid Toxic Texts with your Ex

Posted by Kendra Handy

In my work as an adult therapist and parenting consultant and coach at The Sibley Group, I work with a lot of couples who are going through a divorce.  This is an extraordinarily stressful time as there can be a lot of conflict between the two adults. When the conflict is high it is difficult to co-parent without the tensions ...READ MORE »

Mothering and Re-Mothering: Why it’s Important to Care for Yourself First

Posted by Kendra Handy

Becoming a mother is perhaps one of the most significant shifts in identity and roles that a woman can experience.  You go from being responsible for yourself to being responsible for the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being of your child.  It can feel scary, daunting, exciting, hopeful, and paralyzing all at the same time. In this experience, you also ...READ MORE »

Supporting Emotional Growth in Children: 4 Helpful Steps

Posted by Jocelin Bailey

Emotions have a bad reputation in our culture.  While we are typically comfortable expressing and being around others who are expressing joy, excitement, or a calm demeanor, we see other emotions as unacceptable.  We understand that all humans of all ages experience a wide range of emotions, yet we don’t want to see them all, even in our children. Why? ...READ MORE »

Loving Your Way Through Depression

Posted by Allison Sibley

This week, I’m writing the 3rd blog post in our series about Dealing with Depression in Your Relationship.  Two weeks ago, we discussed how to discern if you or your partner is dealing with clinical depression, which often requires medication, or situational depression, which is often treated through psychotherapy and behavioral changes in daily habits.  Last week, we reviewed ...READ MORE »

How to Tell if You or Your Partner is Depressed

Posted by Allison Sibley

This blog is the first in a 3-part series, where I want to spend some time talking through how depression plays a part in intimate relationships.  As a couples therapist in Washington DC and nearby Bethesda, MD, I often treat couples where one or both partners is coping with depression. I also treat couples who are undecided about whether ...READ MORE »

Gratitude in Daily Life

Posted by Kendra Handy

A few weeks ago, in the midst of a hectic day of holiday shopping, I came across some Thanksgiving decorations on final clearance and recognized that I was definitely not thankful for the long lines and list of things to do.  But as I waited in that line, I had time to reflect on the importance of gratitude and how ...READ MORE »

Containing Yourself and Your Difficult Relationships During the Holidays: Part III

Posted by Justin Barrasso

Have you ever been in a situation where someone was talking to you and in that process, they were making you feel like you either had to do something to fix the situation for them or that you had done something wrong?  Perhaps they were complaining or perhaps they were being downright nasty towards you. Typically, when we find ourselves ...READ MORE »

New Service Offerings: Mental Health Consultations

TSG is aware of the high level of need for mental health support and treatment for the families in our community and beyond, and an increasingly short supply of available therapists. We are excited to offer new services with immediate daytime availability: Mental Health Consultations. These appointments are a one-time or brief preventive and/or supportive service for individuals and families who are not engaged in therapy at TSG, yet could benefit from consulting with a mental health expert in a variety of ways. Email intake@thesibleygroupdc.com for more information or to schedule a consultation.
