With Valentine’s Day approaching, it feels like the perfect time to write about love! While this day is traditionally associated with romantic love, as a therapist I reflect on love more broadly as an internal resource of compassion, affection, joy, kindness, and goodwill that can be directed outwardly or felt within.
Often love shows up in therapy when we are exploring pain or shame because there is a wound involving a loss of or a longing for love. Other times, love comes up as we explore relationships with self and others, and love is present in that connection.
One way that helps clients cultivate or deepen feelings of love and compassion is through a practice called “Metta” Meditation. So in honor of Valentine’s Day, let’s explore the profound benefits of Metta Meditation!
The Heart of Metta Meditation
Metta, commonly translated as loving-kindness, is a form of meditation rooted in Buddhist traditions. It involves directing well-wishes and positive intentions towards oneself and others. This mindfulness practice offers a unique opportunity to expand our perception of love beyond romantic relationships, and to see love as an abundant internal resource that can have a positive impact on our mental health and relationships. It encourages us to cultivate a deep sense of love and compassion for ourselves, our loved ones, acquaintances, and beyond – including people we may find challenging.

- Close your eyes, relax your body, and focus on your breath.
- Then, repeat phrases such as “May I be happy, may I be healthy, may I be safe, may I be at ease.”
- Allow these words to resonate within you, cultivating a sense of love and well-being towards yourself.
Extend to Loved Ones:
- Gradually, expand the circle of your loving-kindness to include close friends, family members, and anyone else you hold dear. Repeat the phrases with them in mind. Visualize them experiencing happiness, health, safety, and ease.
Include Neutral Individuals:
- Next, include people you may not know well or feel neutral about—colleagues, neighbors, or acquaintances. Allow your well-wishes to extend to them, recognizing their humanity and the shared desire for happiness.
Embrace Difficult Relationships:
- Challenge yourself by extending metta towards individuals with whom you may have conflicts or difficulties. This step can be particularly transformative, fostering understanding and softening the edges of anger or resentment.
Expand to All Beings:
- Finally, imagine sending your feelings of loving-kindness to all living beings, acknowledging our interconnectedness and shared human experience. Envision a world where everyone experiences love, joy, and compassion.
