Getting There One Step at a Time: Part 3 – Standing on Top of Africa
Summit day began at 3 a.m. in the dark. It was a 14.5-hour push of steady climbing, surrender, and trust. When I finally stood on Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa—I cried. Not just because I did it, but because I felt both big and small atop this vast, glorious mountain. From my shaking, weak legs all the way to my strong resolve to summit Kilimanjaro, I was both humbled and strengthened by making it to the peak.
The mountain gave me four truths I carry home:
- Small steps lead to great things.
- We are all worthy of profuse help and gracious love.
- I am part of something bigger, even as a small being in this vast world.
- And yes—I did it. Something big….one strong, slow step at a time.
Kilimanjaro reminded me of what I tell families every day: transformation is possible. Whether in therapy, parenting, or life—you climb by moving forward, step by step. You grow by making small, cumulative changes, 1% at a time.
