Family Counseling and Therapy
Would you like to communicate better and have more fun with your family? Would you like to hear less complaining and more appreciation from family members? Would you like to feel equipped to handle those difficult family conversations and weather an upcoming transition in your family? Do you ever wonder if your family would benefit from family therapy? Is your family in crisis or undergoing a very difficult period?
Family therapy can occur with families of school-aged children, teenagers, or adult family members coping with issues of transition. Because we’re a practice full of child and adolescent specialists, we are uniquely trained to provide flexible family therapy that caters to children of all ages, and we often utilize activities and play-based strategies to engage all members of the family.
Family therapy is also helpful for families with college-aged or adult children. It is a mode of helping members in the family begin to understand old patterns of relating, and work towards understanding and developing new methods for having improved conversations.
We offer flexible family therapy to our clients in an educational and approachable manner. Our family work is often provided in combination with other therapies, including child or adolescent therapy, group counseling or couples therapy. We use activities and communication exercises to help families become more connected and better communicate with each other.
We use a few approaches in our work with families, including family systems, structural family therapy and Emotionally Focused Family Therapy. Primarily, we plan to help families work through their communication blocks and patterns where they feel “stuck,” and practice new, more positive patterns of relating to each other. We try to help families open up new conversations so that they can develop new patterns for relating better.
Our approach to working with families is both integrative and flexible. We work with what families bring to the table, and we try provide an array of communication strategies for members in the family to try at home. While we believe family healing often takes time, we do understand that sometimes family work is done intermittently and we will work with families on arranging a plan that is suitable for a family’s needs and schedule.
