Parent Work @ TSG
TSG Therapists are specially trained in a variety of approaches to working with parents. We cater our work with you to help you help your child. Our therapists have training in approaches such as SPACE [Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions], PCIT [Parent Child Interaction Therapy], PMT [Parent Management Training], Filial Therapy, and EFFT [Emotionally Focused Family Therapy]. We also involve you in the process of all of our child and teen therapy approaches to ensure you understand your child’s challenges, their treatment plan, and how to support their progress outside of the therapy hour.
HOW DO WE SUPPORT ALL PARENTS?
We know that parenting children who are participating in therapy can feel uncertain and overwhelming. We don’t know what information to apply to our situation and need it distilled and organized. And, as busy parents, we don’t have endless resources (time, money) to support our own growth while we also support our children’s therapy.
TSG provides all parents who are clients with the opportunity to participate in their own parent growth. Dr. Allison Sibley has combined her 25 years of clinical experience helping children/parents and 15 years as a parent and developed a parent growth course specifically for parents in your situation who want more than just a parenting book or parenting information or advice.
PARENT PRACTICES DAILY PROGRAM & COURSE
This 5-week course is interactive, easy, and brief—It is full of information that sets parents on their own Pathway for Parent Growth as they support their children’s mental health. It includes video/audio, written content, and a digital workbook. For parents too busy to do the full course, don’t worry!–[Stay tuned for mp3 versions and a brief PDF available for download as well]. All TSG Families receive this course and the opportunity to join a Parent Circle at a specially discounted fee for being part of the practice. The Parent Practices Daily Program supports parents who are raising a child with ADHD through supportive Parent Support Circles and Online Daily Coaching.
HOW DO WE INCLUDE PARENTS IN CHILD/TEEN THERAPY at TSG?
TSG Child therapists have a variety of ways of working with parents.
We Believe Firmly that parent work makes child treatment work.
Parent Work could include the following:
-
Check-ins with you before or after the sessions.
-
Parent-child check-ins at the end or beginning of the session.
-
Parent Updates emailed by you to be discussed with your therapist in a separate check-in.
-
Parent Consultations (as needed or regularly scheduled sessions) to work on issues related to supporting work on the primary issue.
-
Parent-Child Sessions as needed or regularly scheduled sessions.
-
Parent Therapy (with your child’s therapist or another therapist) to help parents work on their own issues that are triggered in the parenting experience.
-
Individual Adult Therapy with another therapist (TSG or Outside Referral) to help parents work on their own well-being and to receive mental health support/interventions.
-
Parent Interventions (specialized, time-limited)–SPACE, EFFT, Filial, etc.
-
Parent Groups (virtual or online) to provide support, education, and/or coaching.
HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR CHILD/TEEN’S THERAPY?
-
Interview your child’s therapist to make sure you feel like you can invest in the person, vouch for and trust the process for and with your child.
-
Bring your child to therapy fed, rested, and ready- that includes bathroom stops :)
-
Show up curious, accepting, and positive about the therapy process.
-
Try to hold your questions and opinions about the therapy experience for private discussion with the therapist.
-
Encourage your child with neutral and positive statements especially at first.
-
Provide regular Parent Updates to your therapist.
-
Ask for a Parenting Consultant when you are stuck or dealing with a big issue.
-
Research Parent Interventions and inquire further if you need more help.
-
Consider Parent Therapy if an issue is triggering your own personal work.
-
Know that therapy is a process for kids too and takes time.
-
Have statements ready to respond to your child when they complain or express big feelings about therapy.
-
-
We are doing this together.
-
We’re going to try lots of things to help.
-
Problems are best solved with time and help.
-
You can do this. We can do hard things.
-
I know we will do everything we can to help you feel better.
