Alexander Chan, PhD, LMFT
Alex enjoys working with adolescents, couples, and families. He has experience working with a wide audience, from couples dealing with relational conflict to teens struggling with family and peer relationships. Alex’s genuine love of meeting new people and creating connections is evident in his calm, affirming demeanor with his clients.
Alex’s specialized training in marriage and family therapy techniques informs his work with clients. Alex’s primary approach with couples is Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, an evidence-based approach used to treat relationship problems. Alex uses Structural Family Therapy and solution-focused approaches to help families and adolescents cope with communication problems and adjust to the many transitions that are a part of adolescent development. He is also well-versed in proven cognitive and behavioral techniques for managing a variety of emotional issues including anxiety, depression, and anger.
Alex is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the District of Columbia. Alex received a B.A. in Philosophy and Spanish from Furman University. He received an M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy and a Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from Auburn University.
